CelloQuest

So, as mentioned in the blog, it’s been quite a long time since I’ve updated. Been pretty stuck as far as music goes, mostly due to medical things including long-term carpal tunnel and tendonitis in both wrists, plus stiffness and a trigger finger. I’m working with an orthopedic surgeon to start correcting things. I’ve had one carpal tunnel release done, plus a few injections. (Omfg, avoid finger injections if you possibly can. D:) Still having numbness, but I’m hoping to figure the rest out soon.

Good thing is, my son loves both my cello and the old acoustic six-string, so that’s more motivation to keep going. ^^

Got swamped with other stuff for a couple months, but now progress is being made on “Stroke” and “Nothing Else Matters”, as noted on Twitter. Still doing pizz for the former and have started bowing on the latter. They’re both so pretty. *_*

I feel energized. It feels really, really good to be playing again. And it’ll feel a lot better once I have my fingers toughened up again, because it’s pretty painful right now, especially my first two fingers and the side of my thumb. Have to earn my stripes back. ;)

And even though sheet music would be nice, it feels…I don’t know, more organic learning this way? Just putting the song on loop and listening and hearing and feeling and playing. I like it.

So, about those long-term goals…

Well, Prelude’s just such a pretty piece. I really couldn’t help myself. ^^;

I’m pretty comfortable with pizzicato on the first couple of lines now, and have noodled about a bit with the bowing, but I’m not that confident with it yet. Also got a metronome so I stop rushing. And a rock stop, because god knows what happened to my old one and the rubber endpin cover just wasn’t cutting it on the tile floors.

I think I meant to post this here a while ago. Meet Mariska!

So after just about forever, I’ve picked up my cello again. This particular blog will probably be a record of my progress, maybe a place for me to rant or flail should I need to, or breathe a sigh of relief or flail should I accomplish one of my goals.

Hey, look! Goals!

Short-term:

Somewhat-short-term:

Long-term:

Surprisingly, I can still play little bits of pieces I don’t even remember the name of anymore, and I don’t think I ever forgot vibrato. Yay muscle memory. My third and fourth fingers are pretty weak, but I have a little squeezy exercise thing (this is a technical term, clearly) to build finger strength.

I’m okay with taking small steps here. I don’t want to be competitive, I just want to enjoy playing again. Though once I’m closer to where I used to be, I do think it would be nice to find a small group to play with.

It’s been so long that I’d forgotten what I named my cello. (Shush, you. I’ll just bet you named your car, didn’t you?) Anyway, I don’t recall ever seeing it as either gender before, but now that I’ve decided on a new name, it’s most decidedly female. She’s at the shop right now having a small split in one of the lower seams repaired, but I’ll have her back Monday or Tuesday, and then I’ll introduce her and post a picture (or two). She really is a pretty thing. Redhead. ;) Nice voice, too.
